H is for The Host

This month I'm participating in A to Z Challenge, where 100's of bloggers around the world challenge themselves to write every day for the month of April, working their way through the alphabet.  I'm stitching the Buffy The Vampire Slayer alphabet cross stitch pattern (available from my Etsy store).  Each day I will share that letter's stitching, as well as a bit about the relevant character.

H is for Lorne, the Host

I've been calling this the Buffy The Vampire Slayer alphabet, but it is really a Buffy universe alphabet, so includes some characters that only appeared on Angel.

Lorne, known in the first season or two as only The Host, is the first of the Angel-only characters. It's been a number of years since I last watched Angel, and I only watched it a couple of times (as opposed to on re-peat like I did with Buffy) so I apologise in advance for the lack of detail/opinion about these characters.  I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Born Krevlornswath of the Dathwok Clan, Lorne was a peace-loving Deathwok demon native to the world of Pylea.  In 1996 he was sucked through a dimensional portal and wound up in Los Angeles, where he opened a karaoke bar called “Caritas” (Latin for ‘mercy’).  Lorne was able to read people’s auras when they sang.

Lorne tended to be a neutral character, on the side of neither good nor evil.  As the show progressed, he more and more worked with Angel and the team, eventually joining the staff when they took over Wolfram & Hart.

I liked Lorne – he was one of my favourites amongst the new characters on Angel.  He was unique and different from everyone else on either show.  His ‘gift’ was very different too – being able to read people when they sang.  My favourite episodes from Angel (that I can remember anyway!) were the two when the team travelled to Lorne’s home planet to rescue Cordelia.  That world (although being a miserable place) was such a fun diversion from the rest of the season – it was such a contrast to the Lorne we had gotten to know.  And Cordelia as queen was just perfect.

Happy Stitching

  1. Oh Roslyn I am very impressed with your blog....i don't cross-stitch I hasten to add but have always admired those who do so. I've been more of a knitter of late. I used to do some embroidery but not very much. There's quite a few UFOs lying around. You have an Etsy store too...that is so great. I feel like I have missed something not having watched Buffy....I enjoyed reading about your 2015 reading challenge too.

  2. Your cross-stitches are awesome. You really do a good job of capturing the characters. I loved Lorne and his club in the show. It was surprising to find out which actors on the show could really sing.

  3. This one really caught my eye, and as I said before i never followed the series. I like the full on blue suit, and even the horns. I think you captured his essence. You are a cross-stitch marvel!

    1. Thanks Sharon :) The horns took a bit of fiddling to get right, but they worked in the end

  5. Well thank you for visiting from the A to Z It is great to see new folk passing by. I have tried knitting but never Cross Stitch and know nothing about Buffy The Vampire Slayer whatsoever except it must have vampires in it or she would have little to do.

Good luck with the rest of the alphabet and I hope you have many visitors. . .

  6. I loved Lorne, he always had such good advice to give and was a very caring friend. He had to stay neutral to keep his place neutral ground, but you could tell whose side he was on most of the time (Angel's of course). Cordelia was finally in her element as queen, and once she actually met the guy she was supposed to marry (or however that was supposed to work, it's been too long since I've seen the show so I don't actually remember), she was all for it (naturally, shallow Cordy coming through slightly there---when she thought he was going to be an ugly monster she wanted nothing to do with him, when she saw he was a hot young guy she was all about it :P ) and he even managed to visit them a couple times, I believe. I really miss that show!

    1. Hahaha I do remember Cordy being in her element when they visited the other planet. I really need to find Angel on DVD or Netflix-equivalent and rewatch it - it's been many many years

  8. Yes, Lorne was a ton of fun. His name alone cracked me up: Lorne Green was an actor famous in the 50s and 60s, known mostly for starring in Bonanza. This Lorne might well have known that, and picked that famous name to go with his own colorful appearance.

    1. I do believe that joke even made it into the show at one point :)
